COGMED: Help for ADHD, Learning Disorders, Poor Self-Control and much more
What is Cogmed?
Cogmed Working Memory Training is a computer-based solution for attention problems caused by poor working memory. We combine cognitive neuroscience with innovative computer game design and close professional support to deliver substantial and lasting benefits to our users. Our solutions include easy-to-use software and personal support.
Cogmed Working Memory Training is an evidence-based training program developed by leading neuroscientist Torkel Klingberg, M.D., Ph.D. and colleagues to improve attention in individuals with a working memory deficit. Cogmed is backed by peer-reviewed, controlled research done at leading universities around the world and is proven to lead to significant, real life improvements in 80% of users.
In Atlanta, the training program is available through Atlanta Pediatric Psychology Associates, whose staff is trained and qualified by Cogmed. Each Cogmed practitioner is experienced in addressing attention problems and will coach your child through the training program.
Cogmed Working Memory Training improves attention
Cogmed Working Memory Training is a solution for individuals who are held back by their working memory capacity. That includes children and adults with attention deficits or learning disorders, and others experiencing information overload.
Working memory is the ability to keep information in your mind for a short time, focus on a task, and remember what to do next. By training his or her working memory, your child will be better able to stay focused, ignore distractions, plan next steps, remember instructions, and start and finish tasks.
Weak working memory is experienced as attention problems and causes poor academic and professional performance.
Cogmed training delivers substantial improvements in working memory capacity. An individual with strong working memory will experience better ability to focus, resist distractions, and control impulses.
The training benefits are comprehensive, but they all follow from increased working memory capacity. The primary objective of the training is to improve attention, but the overall effect is often described as more mature behavior.
For children, parents report improvement in social skills, taking initiative, remembering instructions, and completing assignments independently. The goal is better academic performance, particularly in math and reading comprehension, as well as social awareness.
Cogmed is based on a research breakthrough: your cognitive functions are not fixed.
Cogmed Working Memory Training is propelled by the idea of neuroplasticity, the idea that an individual’s brain can reorganize itself and change. When Dr. Torkel Klingberg, neuroscientist from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, did the initial research that showed it was possible to actually improve one’s working memory capacity through systematic, intensive training, he demonstrated that working memory capacity is not fixed, but rather plastic; it is malleable and changeable.
The brain has been shown to reorganize itself and change in response to exercise. This reality has large implications for how people approach deficits in learning, communication, social skills, and overall poor cognitive functioning.
Whereas before, cognitive deficiencies were treated with either medication or accommodation, the notion of neuroplasticity provides another avenue of intervention, one that is pragmatic, holistic, and effective. As opposed to artificially and temporarily altering the way your brain works, or just making the environment around you more forgiving of deficiencies – evidence-based cognitive training provides an individual with the option of actually making their brain function better naturally.
Cognitive training is an approach that is in some ways similar to physical exercise or physical therapy. Medication and accommodation changes (like crutches) can go a long way in helping a person deal with an injury, but only through physical training or therapy can a person effectively take control of their abilities and fundamentally impact targeted parts of their body to overcome injuries or improve to new heights.
Cogmed Working Memory Training provides a way for those who are constrained by their working memory to improve their capacity naturally and sustainably – translating to improved attention, focus, and overall cognitive functioning.
Why Cogmed and not X, Y, or Z?
The internet is awash with programs promising to solve whatever ails your child quickly, easily, and cheaply—why choose Cogmed? Because there here are many reasons to select Cogmed:
- It Works. Cogmed is backed by peer-reviewed, controlled research done at leading universities around the world and is proven to lead to significant, real life improvements in 80% of users.
- Professional Qualified Providers. Cogmed is a coach driven program owned and operated only by licensed psychologists or medical doctors. At APPA, Robert Kleemeier, Ph.D. has many years’ experience providing cognitive training along with a broad range of other diagnostic and therapeutic services to children, adolescents, and their families. All other Cogmed staff have been trained and certified by Cogmed.
- A Coach Driven Program providing support and motivation to ensure optimal success. A book is of no use if it isn’t read and an exercise program is of no use if it isn’t followed; the same holds true for cognitive training. To be effective your child must be actively engaged in learning—motivated to do well—and this is where Cogmed shines. Before beginning Cogmed, your child meets with his or her coach to begin forming a learning alliance. Throughout the training your coach receives daily reports of progress (done automatically—no extra work for you) and has weekly phone conferences with you and your child. When your child has completed Cogmed, the coach celebrated with you, awards your child a diploma, and encourages your child to continue working to do even better.
- Cogmed is convenient--done in your home via the computer: Cogmed at APPA is available to anyone in Georgia who has a computer and internet access. No need to spend hours driving to a training center, it comes to you. Your child will appreciate spending 100% of their time on cognitive training, not on commuting.
If you think that Cogmed will meet your child’s needs or for more information, contact the APPA Cognitive Training Director, Susan Kann, M.Ed., today. She looks forward to answering your questions and assuring that your child receives appropriate services.
